    2019/2020 Season

I'm not certain I have permission to add this to the 'permanent' section of threads, so if someone can assist...

    Washington National Opera

The upcoming season is looking up a bit over last year - which I thought both the schedule and the cast lists depressingly uninteresting. I know opera schedules typically are decided considerably in advance, but wonder if the addition of Timothy O'Leary as General Director helped improve the mix this year. It might also have been the results of the poll conducted by WNO as a result of their subscription level falling off last year...

Schedule includes two operas with African-American casting (Blue, Porgy and Bess).

    In any event:

Samson and Delilah (J'Nai Bridges, Roberto Aronica, Noel Bouley; John Fiore, cond)

Don Giovanni (Ryan McKinny, Vanessa Vasquez, Kyle Ketelsen, Alek Shrader; Evan Rogister, newly appointed WNO Principal Conductor)

Blue (Tazewell Thompson, librettist/Jeanine Tesori, composer) w Kenneth Kellogg/Musa Ngqungwana/Denyce Graves

Otello (Leah Crocetto, Russell Thomas, George Gagnidze, Deborah Nansteel; Daniele Callegari, cond)

The Magic Flute (David Portillo, Sydney Mancasola, Wei Wu, Michael Adams; Eun Sun Kim, cond)

Porgy and Bess (Musa Ngqungwana/Alfred Walker, Kristin Lewis/Alyson Cambridge, Kenneth Kellogg, Frederick Ballentine, Denyce Graves; Evan Rogister, cond)

Definitely seems like a better cast lineup of reasonably well-known singers, compared to all the unknown quantities you faced last year! Otello especially sounds like a great cast.

I stuck the thread for you. You probably do have the permission to do it. I gave broad permissions to all staff members a while ago.

Yes, this season and casting are not bad.

    Glimmerglass Festival (Cooperstown, NY)

Glimmerglass is the second company directed by Francesca Zambello (in addition to Washington Nat'l Opera), so some repetition in the schedules between the two companies. Despite the spectacular location and lovely venue, nothing here worth the trip and expense (with hotels averaging about $400/night during the season):

Showboat (this has been around for a while and now is making yet another appearance..)
La Traviata (this is the same production we had this season)
    The Ghost of Versailles
Blue (Also on the WNO schedule)

A Hans Abrahamsen opera for Hannigan, Jonas in Die Tote Stadt, and Katie Mitchell directing Bluebeard's Castle?

Yesterday afternoon, I attended a gathering at Music Hall where the Cincinnati Opera’s General Director/CEO Patty Beggs and Artistic Director Evans Mirages announced plans for the CO’s centennial year in 2020. (Technically, this is the company’s 100th season, the first having been in 1920.)

Probably the most significant news is the world premiere of Castor and Patience, a work commissioned by the Cincinnati Opera with music by Gregory Spears and the libretto by Tracy K. Smith, the U.S. poet laureate. Spears may be best remembered as the composer of Fellow Travelers, an opera that also had its world premiere here a few years ago, and dealt with the “lavender scare” during the McCarthy era. The story of Castor and Patience is set in more recent times – specifically, the worldwide recession that began in 2008. The protagonists are African-American cousins who have inherited a rural property and must decide what they want to do with the family land they’ve acquired – no easy matter, since Castor could definitely use some of the money from a sale. Latonia Moore, who sang Aida here several years ago, will create the role of Patience, with bass-baritone Kevin Short portraying Castor.

Other production include Rossini’s Il Barbiere di Siviglia with Isabel Leonard and Aaron Blake as Rosina and Almaviva; Rusalka with Kim-Lilian Strebel (Pamina here a couple of years ago) in the title role; and Aida with Mary Elizabeth Williams, Marco Berti, Ronnita Miller, Morris Robinson, and Reginald Smith Jr. Though I’ve not actually heard them, I’m familiar with Ms. Williams and Ms. Miller from reviews in Opernwelt and Das Opernglas, all of them favorable. And, of course, I know Mr. Robinson (the CO's Artistic Advisor) and Mr. Smith from past seasons.

No actual dates were given, but performances will take place in June and July of next year.

As a side note, the announcement and preceding reception took place in Music Hall’s Corbett Tower, which I’d not seen since the building underwent a massive renovation/restoration in 2016-2017. In the process, the original 19th century stenciling on the room’s cove ceiling was uncovered, and it’s gorgeous. Makes one wonder why the decision was ever made to conceal it.

The CO has posted more specifics about the 2020 season on its web site. There is also a fifth production (and another world premiere) on offer with Fierce by William Menefield and Sheila Williams, which will be a collaborative effort by several local groups. There is also an assortment of special anniversary events being presented this year and next, among them a recital by tenor Stephen Costello this coming October at Memorial Hall, located just south of Music Hall on Elm St. Details are on the web site.
