I think Karita Mattila once canceled appearances with Valery Gergiev because of the conductor's close association with Putin. But to cancel an appearance with someone simply on the basis of his/her nationality does seem questionable. I wonder how the opera community at large will react to Eyvazov's decision.

Whether Eyvazov really cares one way or another, his agents could have pressed the issue to "protect" their client. Armenia and Azerbaijan have been in a cold/hot war over disputed territory for decades. It could cause a lot of bad press in his country; I wonder if his standard contract already contains a clause that he can't sing with Armenians. The Semperoper seems to admit they made a mistake:

I wonder if we'll ever learn what actually happened here. The statement from the Semper Opera seems to put the blame on the soprano's management, saying "There may have been a misunderstanding . . . " The statement also indicates that no contract had been signed engaging her to sing at the Opera Ball. Are organizers covering their posteriors and Eyvazov's as well? Or did the soprano and/or her management jump to conclusions when she wasn't offered a contract and decided that the Azerbaijani tenor had to be behind it? I noticed that the original news report inaccurately identified Anna Netrebko as Azerbaijani, when in fact she's Russian. I get the impression some incorrect assumptions may have been made, and the situation blew up from there.

I can hear the sound of frantic back-pedalling from all parties. However YE should not have posted this in which he ridicules Ms. Mantashyan as an 'unknown who will finally be known after this scandal'. (If the translation is accurate).

Yikes. Yeah, the news coverage was Armenian, so that's why I thought it could be overblown for patriotic sympathy. Either way, this is an immature response from Eyvazov.
