    James Levine Has Passed Away

    https://www.nytimes.com/2021/03/17/o...vine-dead.html

Don't know how I missed this -- James Levine died on 9 March at his home in Palm Springs, California. Cincinnati is his hometown (born and grew up here), yet if there was anything in the local media, I didn't see it. As far as I know, there was nothing from our performing arts organizations, either, even though he was the Music Director of the May Festival from the mid-to-late 1970s, performed as a 10 year-old piano prodigy with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, and was even a child supernumerary with the Cincinnati Opera.

Like Plácido Domingo, he was an enormously gifted artist whose long career was tainted near the end by allegations of sexual misconduct, for which an independent investigator hired by the Met found credible evidence. (He was supposed to come back here to lead performances of Verdi's Requiem at the May Festival, but his participation was canceled in the wake of the allegations.) His opera discography is enormous, with many Met performances included among the video recordings.

Forgot that he also conducted Cincinnati Opera performances of Il Barbiere di Siviglia in 1971 and was scheduled to conduct the CO's Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg during the 2010 90th anniversary season, but had to cancel due to illness.
Back in the '80s, it seemed at times that everyone here knew someone connected to him -- one of my neighbors knew his aunt; another neighbor had a friend who knew his 3rd grade teacher . . . !
