The skill of those Bunraku puppet operators is mind-blowing, the way they make the puppet move so naturally. In fact the puppet looked more natural and emotional than Marcello Giordani, who to me is the real weak link of this production. Lovely guy, but....
I've been looking for a good Butterfly for ages. I think I'll get this.

Started listening to my Wagner at the Met box set with Rheingold.
AMAZING singing and imho very good recording.
One of my favorite Rheingolds now.
MUCH better than the very disappointing Gergiev Rheingold.

Homework for Saturday's NZ Opera performance - I like the Sinopoli better, it's more nuanced.

    Spotify listening:

I simply don't know what Placidone is thinking - or the record companies, although judging from some Amazon reviews there are listeners who don't seem to have noticed that instead of a baritone they got an aging tenor. "He's amazing for his age" doesn't make him good or correct for the fach.

I thought that this was OK but not overwhelming. I loved her Giovanna D'Arco aria though.

    It's cute, but not opera.

    This on the other hand...

Yeah, I know, I know. I think the 3 Tenors did it as an encore or something, but, still, I know, I know. I saw your Spain market flash mob too. Also, very cool.

Well, until the arrival of Laura Aikin in the show, this one was headed for the garbage can. From that point on, it was a different story. And, I'm glad I waited because everything about the last couple of minutes, including the music, was outstanding.

I thought the concept was fine, but the realization lackluster. Other updated productions of this opera have been more successful.

It lost me when Monterone came on as an Arab Sheik. I got the giggles and found it hard to take it seriously.

A windy/sunny/ rainy/cloudy/all-over-the-place day in Berkhamsted and I am enjoying reading the exclusive articles, interviews and threads on Opera Lively. It is really good reading thanks to all. Exclusive articles lead me to Il Trovatore, always enjoyable.

Exploring some singers who are less familiar to me... and some music that is less-well-known as well.
