I love the Sills Lucia recording! It took me a couple of listens to get used to her voice - I had gotten so totally transfixed by La Stupenda's bel canto, that any other soprano sounded harsh. This Sills recording is great, in my view, and does the mad scene with glass harmonica accompaniment, which is downright creepy (in a good way), which is the way Donizetti first wrote it. I also have the Gruberova recording, which is good, but prefer the Sills. If I can figure out the Pristine/Divina downloads, I will go after that Callas version, which has me drooling (even more than usual).

I'm still here (it's bugging me). Different approach. I can't find the post but do I remember correctly that you have the naxos recording of the 1953 studio recording? If so, the difference with the Pristine is like listening from a different room with the speakers covered. It is so brilliant it will make you smile after 2-3 seconds.
Close. I have the 1957 Anna Bolena with Callas (EMI), which is lousy - but have not yet heard her Lucia. I do, however, have the awesome Naxos 1957 Callas La Sonnambula , which is so good that I erased the recent Dessay Sonnambula from iTunes - banished her to the Cloud forever and ever.

You think EMI 57 Anna lousy? Oh gosh! I need to put William Tell on hold again and go check that once more. I've only listened to it once but I thought it was a good balance with noise. Divina will let you hear sooo much more but there is some noise that they had to let through... like in act 3 scene 3 between "Piangete voi" and "Al doce guidami" the noise is bad and you would want to skip through that part.
Absolutely no fault with the Pristine Lucia. It is beautiful.

I understand what lousy means. Yes there is a lot of %&$£ on EMI recording not on Divina.

Oh yeah. Sorry about that. I realized after I posted that by 'lousy' I was referring to the quality of the recording itself, and not Mari- which might have been unclear.

This is the best COMPLETE recording of Lucia out there.
Moffo and Bergonzi are killer and Pretre nails it.
The Sills is a great one too.
I'm talking COMPLETE guys. Which reveals this opera for the masterpiece it is.
