A very underrated comic opera, filled with great tunes and a couple of great arias.
I love listening to it.
Amazing that Verdi could write such a bubbly opera after seeing such personal tragedy .

Yes, or in fact any opera. Why the music did not just stop there is difficult to comprehend.

I bought a book of the letters of Verdi many years ago that has just been lying on the shelf since. I maybe will start reading it soon and some answers may lie there.

Brilliant. Who would have thought; write an opera that includes a singing contest!
Act 2 is superb. Kollo is such a passionate voice. and Elisabeth comes back with some beautiful songs. and Braun, wow. This is a really high scorer! I like it as much (or more?) than Lohengrin. I don't know... will have to do another side by side listen!
