What opera have you been listening to, lately?

Getting ready for our local opera company's 2012 season, which gets underway next Thursday with a double bill of I Pagliacci and Gianni Schicchi. I'm also looking forward to hearing Porgy and Bess at the end of the month, and have been listening to this video to prepare:


Fabulous cast, terrific staging -- I can see why this video was so highly recommended by some of our other members.

These have already been reviewed here; I'll just add my voice to the positive recommendations. The Elektra is stark and harrowing, with a knockout ending. The Anna Bolena has sumptuous costumes and appropriate fireworks between Netrebko and Garanca. The Rienzi takes the ultimate Regie cliche (Wagner is really all about Hitler and the Nazis), but applies it with such meticulous commitment--referencing everything from Riefenstahl's Triumph of the Will to Chaplin's The Great Dictator--that by the end it's hard to imagine (or want) the opera done any other way.

Rigoletto with Bergonzi, Gianna D'Angelo and MacNeil. Not bad. Actually it was great performance (especially from Bergonzi), but the recording is a bit less than great.

Thanks to the joys of Spotify, which has just become available in NZ, I've been listening to this:



I seem to recall Schigolch praising Invernizzi some time ago, and I see whiy, this is a fantastic album and she sings beautifully.

DA, I reckon you need this if you don't already have it.

I know her great Vivaldi work since she appears on several of the Naive label Vivaldi Operas I own.
Also there is a series of early Handel Italian Cantatas on Glossa label that feature her......

The CD you reference is not yet released in USA, on Glossa label which means very expensive
