I had forgotten to, as this was an incidental purchase; the target acquisition was Ernani but I wanted to split USD 12 cost of purchase so ordered this one as well. As it turns out the average purchase cost turned out to be <GBP 16, which for a great recording is really very good (well, I haven't actually listened to Ernani yet).
Anyway, as I said, I like it.
Very good sound quality for 1962 live recording.
Performance wise, Cossotto makes a great Azucena, more dramatic than Simionato in the 64 Schippers recording. I hear more fire when she tells me of her mother burning.
Stella also makes a lovely Leonora, prettier than Tucci and Price (in the 78 Karajan, my benchmark).
Whilst Bastianini is a grand Count, I think I prefer the richer more powerful (emotionally) renditions of Cappuccilli and Merrill.
I am though still in favour of the orchestration by Karajan which I think is more dramatic than Schippers and Gavazzeni.
Of course Corelli is great in both recordings, perhaps slightly more passionate (A si ben mio) but sometimes a little hurried (Di quella pira) in the 62 live performance and a little more powerful in the later recording. This one (the Rome recording) he also has a little less of the rlrlrlrlrlr (I don't know any technical term for this) which is preferable.
Overall a great recording to listen to so thanking you again for the tip.

Ahh! Worth it.

Pleasantly surprised by this, of course some of the music was VERY familiar. Carreras was predictably good (I love him in bel canto, nice meaty sound) but I also liked Ugo Benelli’s lovely light tenor and Valerie Masterson’s shining tones. I have to confess that while I admire Montsy’s piano notes, this recording has confirmed that I am not a fan of the timbre of her voice, especially when she goes more forte.
Stefan Herheim’s Rusalka from La Monnaie should really be renamed “Water Gnome’s reincarnation as Pervy Old Dude”, as most of the action focusses on Willard White rather than beautiful Myrtò Papatanasiu in the title role. It’s an interesting production though, well sung and with excellent acting.
The Tutto Verdi Ernani is a dog. It is lumpen, park and bark and overall badly sung. You could play “spot the passaggio” with Marco Berti; Giacomo Prestia has a terrible wobble and Susan Neves is shrill. Thank goodness for Carlo Guelfi as the King, he is the only redeeming feature.
