Talk about contrast! Went from one to the other... What different philosophies in string section orchestration, yet both work fine. Two great melodists, one the unyieldingly individualistic stylist, the other the eclectic master of different styles.

I went to see Prince Igor from the Met at my local cinema. I was really impressed with the way Tcherniakov had transformed it from an beautiful but episodic collection of set pieces into a coherent dramatic whole. The cast was brilliant and the only fly in the ointment was the endless feeble interviews and intermissions, which seeing as it was not even live could all have been edited out.

April edition of Opera magazine tells me La Calisto performance by Cincinatti Opera this year. A bit too far for me so listened to CD instead.

Well that was a riot. Beautiful singing - another triumphant Rossini tenor in Javier Camarena - and very funny production.
If anyone wants to be convinced of the combined beauty of Handel and the counter-tenor voice they should get this. Simply stunning.

I think my first listening of counter-tenor was Filippo Mineccia (Tolomeo) in Giulio Cesare. The first reaction was

I have the video version of this production, with a similar but not identical cast (no Simon Keenlyside, unfortunately). Filippo Mineccia is pretty cool and I have his alto arias, but Iestyn Davies has the voice of an angel. When your list subsides I'd go for the Handel.
