Les Arts Florissants,
William Christie
Recorded October 1991
Oh gosh! I think I may have to spend some more time with French Baroque.
Yes, This is a very good recording - sound is good, audience noises kept to a minimum (I used to hate - hate - recordings with audience noises, but have pretty much come to terms with them). There is another live recording on Naxos conducted by Alberto Zedda and, of course an Opera Rara recording that I'm sure can be bought through multiple payments, if one were to ask.
Talking of Les indes Galantes, I've just watched an extremely interesting production from Bordeaux. Starting and ending a sort of garden of Eden setting with the most innocent and joyful display of theatrical nudity I have ever seen, and accompanied by three rather comical tourist ladies as personifications of Love, it took us to loves vs convention in Turkey; drug lords and power excesses in Peru, gender discrimination and abuse in Persia, and deforestation and consumerism in the States. And somehow this worked really well with Rameau's music and even text, and was more satisfying and less episodic than the Christie DVD which is very good too.
You can watch it for yourselves on CultureBox.

try Belisario... If you don't like it, I will buy you a pint next time you're in Berkhamstead...
Let's just say these drug trials make me feel funny. I don't think I'm in the plaseebo, plathebo, pla.. the group where you don't get the medicine.
At long last the search is over and I have acquired the holy grail of Norma recordings.....
The 1967 stereo studio CD recording with Elena Suliotis in amazing voice, excellent luxury cast with roman god himself Mario Del Monaco in full forte tenor style and an excellent Adalgisa in Fiorenza Cossotto, sound quality is excellent by Decca.
The recording is edited to shorten timing to fit on 2 vinyl LPs of original release, CD 2 is filled out with 4 bonus aria tracks showing great bel canto style of Elena
Only singer to really come close to rivaling Callas as the definitive Norma is Suliotis in this recording, it has everything a Norma lover needs and seems impossible to capture with todays singers, this is an essential opera treasure!

Oh $%£&! Now this is one of my favourite operas.
Anna is now my favourite Tatyana. I love her in the Russian repertoire.
Borrowed this from the library; an interesting but ultimately unconvincing production, and the first thing I've seen in where Skovhus' acting managed to overcome my dislike of his singing.
Lovely Roberta Invernizzi:
