This is one opera where I always watch the video vs listening to CD, one of the very best baroque videos ever........
    Christie conducts both versions

I know that one of these days I am going to have to break down and do the DVD thing. I've added this to my wish list along with the The Demon.

It was a 'two-fer' kind of day:

    and, new to me:

I like them both, but very different styles highlighting the difference between the bel canto and dramatic approaches of the two composers. Leonie Rysanek, in the Verdi, is an outstanding Desdemona.

La Traviata is not my favorite Verdi, but this is a nice version with Teresa Stratas, Fritz Wunderlich, Hermann Prey and Brigitte Fassbänder. Recorded live with pretty good sound. And, it's even in Italian!

and, my second listen - every bit as wonderful as the first - after this, I'm convinced Fredericka von Stade can out-sing Montserrat Caballe in Rossini:

    Echo that
"Every theatre is an insane asylum, but an opera theatre is the ward for the incurables."

I thank you all for your kind words. I am about 60% back; the cricket super series is on so I am listening to TMS on the radio all day...

However this morning I was listening to

    Strauss, R: Arabella
Lisa della Casa (Arabella), Hilde Gueden (Zdenka), George London (Mandryka), Anton Dermota (Matteo), Otto Edelmann (Graf Waldner), Ira Malaniuk (Adelaide), Mimi Coertse (Fiakermilli), Waldemar Kmentt (Elemer), Eberhard Wächter (Dominik)
    Wiener Philharmoniker,
    Sir Georg Solti
    Recorded: May/June 1957 Sofiensaal, Vienna

Very glad to make aquaintance with Arabella/Lisa Della Casa.

This is really good, but I think I prefer the studio version - the microphone placement is critical in live recordings.

A lovely opera and a wonderful recording I only had listened to once before. Anita Cerquetti and her male co-stars really bring do bring down the house.

    And, for my afternoon walk:

Why, you ask? Well, because what is life without Bellini?

I wouldn't question anyone listening to any Bellini; even his student/earlier pieces.

What is life without Bellini? Like a broken pencil; pointless (A humbug for anyone who can say where that quote comes from)

Now this on the other hand is in the running for one of the worst cover designs in my tea cabinet. The opera though is beautiful and Edita is as always like a strawberry shortcake and champagne whilst listening to TMS on the radio under the parasol. (? - okay, odd even by my standards)

I think you will love it. Such beautiful music, and Renee is vocally just right for Thais.
