Back to listening again after my holidays in the South Island - spending time with my opera-hating family puts a dent in my favourite hobby, although I did manage to catch up on some good YouTubes once everyone was asleep.
Now in the car I'm rocking some Vivaldi. Some of those fast arias might possibly not be the best thing to drive to, hehe. But the casts are amazing.
Found this on Spotify, snuck it in at work on Thursday evening as I had no visitors to the library.

I interrupted my packing to attend my first Board of Trustees meeting at my old school in Ohio late last week, which turned out to be way more intense than I had anticipated. Between the meetings, dinners and post-meeting gossip, I fell into bed exhausted each night, and without opera. I was kind of surprised that I didn't descend into the DTs...

The Mozart is shear genius , one can hear the pleasure Maestro Solti had by recording it.
My big move is a week from tomorrow (Friday), so am in the homestretch.
Just the ticket for a long afternoon of packing (played quite loudly so I could hear it downstairs):

I just bought this off Amazon - I pushed the transaction button before remembering that it would be an additional thing to move.
However, it is a really lovely recording - Katia Ricciarelli seems to be in peak form - highly recommended recording of a lovely opera.
Warning: this opera can cause an acute infestation of earworms. And in my case deep abiding love for Gerald Finley.

I hadn't listened to this in some time, and now I remember why. Compared with EMI's rather ethereal version with Mady Masple, this Sutherland/Bonynge recording sounds plodding and heavy. It will be awhile before I drag it out again (so to speak).
Then:
This is a live recording (Venice, 1964) and although generally good, Gencer's and principals' singing generally is not up to the standard set by the excellent recording with Sutherland (1966). The sound, while pretty good, suffers from singers' movements around the stage - fading in and out - and audience applause, etc.
If Lakme is on the list, may I suggest the DVD/Blu ray from Opera Australia, with Emma Matthews. I had forgotten what a lovely score it has if performed well. In addition to good singing, the sets are amazingly colorful in Blu ray and the sound is gratifying to these old ears.
