A great cast of beautiful voices and a beautiful opera with lovely melodies make this one of my favourite Vivaldi recordings. I really like Anthony Rolfe Johnson voice; the only cast member I did not know about.

    Is the actual CD worse?
I guess it's not really terrible, but the sound quality is not great. Microphones seem to have been placed at enough of a distance that it gives the listener a strong sense of the age of the recording. Sort of like listening to a Met recording from the 1930s or 40s.

The singing comes through, but the sound doesn't seem to have been remastered - which, given today's technology, is the least companies should be able to do with their old live performances.

    Turandot: Maria Callas
    Emperor Altoum: Giuseppe Nessi
    Timur: Nicola Zaccaria
    Calaf: Eugenio Fernandi
    Liu: Elizabeth Schwarzkopf
    et al.

    Conductor: Tullio Serafin

This is a wonderful performance from 1957, although I'm not crazy about Elizabeth Schwarzkopf's heavily voiced Liu. Eugenio Fernandi does a superb job with Calaf (though it's funny that my ear seems to have been trained to always expect Pavarotti's voice in that role). Callas is riveting - really stunning - as the Princess.

Fortunately, La Verita in cimento (The Lady in Cement?) is available on iTunes for U.S. $11.99 - can't beat that!

Now that was quick action! I thought Hoffmann was merely indicating price and availability and did not realize immediate acquisition of stock!

Do we think that we can bring out the very rarely used and guarded Hoffmann term "sublime" for a few of these arias? At least the Rosane, Melindo and Zelim (Bertagnolli/Mingardo/Jaroussky) trio perhaps?

I think Anthony Rolfe Johnson's portrayal of Mamud is wonderful. This for me is sublime. From the opening aria and especially his last. Beautiful.

I thought I did not know Rolfe Johnson (it turned out he is on one of my recordings of Armide) and I started to investigate straight away. He has since passed away (2010). This recording was older than I thought. I understand about the oblong of life and all that but I was still pretty upset. Bravo to this performance though.

Anthony Rolfe-Johnson sings Florestan on one of the latest additions to my ever-expanding Fidelio collection.

He has a bit of a tough time of it with the aria (another score of Beethoven: 1 - Tenor: 0), but after that, sings very attractively. I knew his voice and that of the Leonore, Gabriela Benačková, were of a more lyrical quality, which was a major reason I wanted this recording.

There's no such thing, I've discovered, as too much Bellini. Also, as I've come to understand (in my dotage), there seems to be no such thing as too much Anna Netrebko..). So:

Note: The edits above corrected my use of a wrong word in my original post on the Rolfe-Johnson Fidelio. Quite embarrassing . . .

Woke up today to a strange sound

it took a few moments to figure out

it was Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg in my head

The postman delivered yesterday and as normal, the postman always knocks twice (I don't have a doorbell)

    Wagner: Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg

I can not comment on this recording as I am under a twenty hour self imposed posting ban for reactions to new recording until I learn to control myself a bit better
