I bought this a while back and hadn't listened to it, so made it my listen during this morning's walk. I didn't like it very much, I thought it rather lifeless and Ruggero Raimondi just wasn't cutting it.
So, when I got home, I decided to remind myself what Samuel Ramey did with the role and see how Riccardo Muti handled the conducting:
No contest. Samuel Ramey really kind of swaggers through the role and Muti makes the opera come alive.

I'm being a bit sneaky and incorporating this into how I practise French for school...I'm following along with a French urtext score I found online which is really cool! However, sung French does sound quite different to spoken French...but at least I have the libretto to read along to.![]()
If you would seek salvation, remember this:
a life in Hell can still aspire to BLISS.
I am on a very boring job of color correcting today. The only advantage of working with no sound is that I can listen to music.

This morning's listen:
Herbert von Karajan, Conductor, with Elizabeth Schwarzkopf, Nan Merriman, Rolando Panerai, Lisa Otto, Sesto Bruscantini, et al. and Philharmonia Orchestra & Chorus
Some very pretty singing here and the sound is really very good for 1954.
