So much lovely singing from Klaus Florian Vogt, a great cast, and beautiful music. And it's a singspiel about the young Goethe, if that is not too much of an oxymoron. Highly recommended.

Quite heavy Puccini listening recently (except for the usual Verdi around campus but I don't even count when I listen to fragments of Un Ballo in Maschera any more as it's usually a daily occurrence...)

I hadn't listened to this recording of ICEIM since I bought it - it was time to queue it up again. Overall, I prefer the Muti/Gruberova/Baltsa set, but needed to give this one another shot.

This really is a glorious recording. I love Tebaldi's Elisabeth and also the pairing of Carlo Bergonzi and DFD in the famous duet. And, as I know I've said before, I really love Nicolai Ghiaurov's Philip II!
This morning I decided on something I've only listened to once, and rather enjoyed:

As much as I love Walküre, I have to admit that listening to Act II can be a bit taxing. It's important to the development of the plot, but there isn't much that happens musically until the end of the act and the confrontation between Wotan, Brunhilde, Siegmund & Sieglinde occurs, leading up to Siegmund's demise at the hand of Hunding.
I just listened to Act III again this morning, and the music alone (that is, without watching the stage action) during the Wotan - Brunhilde scene is just heartbreaking.
My favourite part of the opera occurs at the end of act 2 when as you mention things start looking up. I love the dialogue between Siegmund and Brünnhilde.Indeed, Die Walküre it was:

A somewhat Mixed listening today while revising for dissertation.
The second act is always chilling due to how light much of the music is in comparison to what you know is coming.
Been cycling through all the other Puccini the past fortnight so it seems like its Minnie's turn.

This kept my spirits up while battling the wind and the horizontal rain today.
I'm going to the final dress rehearsal of Nabucco at ROH in June. I'm rather hoping that it will be Platanias at the rehearsal and not PD. He's past it and he never was a baritone.

Scary Imogen. I don't like the wind at all.
Both kinds of wind.
I love Act II. For me, the music, if not always suitable for concert excerpts, is wonderfully effective within the context of the compelling drama.
But Walküre is my favorite opera, so I'm a bit biased.
