I disagree. I feel we need the set up for the next 4 acts, to underline the origins of their doomed love, and the pull between love and duty that domiates Elisabetta. It's also important to know that she was given a choice whether to accept the marriage or not.

True enough. On the other hand, I do think there's something to be said for the unity of place in the four-act version, keeping us restricted to the oppressive atmosphere of the Counter-Reformation Spanish court. And in this telling, the love of Carlo and Elisabetta seems an even more tenuous memory, perhaps more a nostalgic illusion than anything really substantial.
At any rate, of my four versions on DVD, I'm happy to have one of them be the four-act.

I finally couldn't stand it - had to get out for a walk (not to mention some relief from the nephew who will be staying with me for some 2 weeks longer than I anticipated - a good kid, but waaaay too pre-occupied with video games at age 26). At 90+ degrees and high humidity, it wasn't much fun. But, still...
A nice opera and well-sung, though I admit that I prefer Rossini's other efforts with more fireworks.
