Gioacchino Rossini
IL BARBIERE DI SIVIGLIA
Broadcast performance
Lyric Opera of Chicago
November 18, 1977
dir : Piero Bellugi
Richard Stilwell (Figaro)
Maria Ewing (Rosina)
Luigi Alva (Count Almaviva)
Claudio Desderi (Bartolo)
Paolo Montarsolo (Basilio)
Trudy Hines (Berta)
Tom Fox (Fiorello)
Florindo Andreolli (Sergeant)
We all know Alva's Almaviva from famous He/Callas/Gobbi recording. Here he's spectacular as well and gets very fine partners (except so-so Figaro).
Nice, Schigolch. Please make sure you include these in the Traviata In-Depth discography articles.

Oh dear. Customer "service" on Amazon is capable of reaching a whole new level of obtuseness. I once pointed out a price typo about DVD shipping costs from 3rd party merchants and it took me a month and 11 emails to get through to them that it was a typo on their site and nothing to do with the merchants.

The box doesn't even contain a holder for a second disk, so Decca really slipped up on this one. I wonder if this was an isoldated case, or if there are a number of these flawed sets out there. Perhaps checking Decca's own web site may shed some light on the problem.
I've been listening to a good deal of Richard Strauss lately... which has only served to reinforce my belief that Glen Gould was right when he referred to Strauss as "the greatest musical figure who has lived in this century."

This recording is strongly disrecommended. You can hear multiple coughs coming from audience during Deh tu bell'anima which may lead you to killing yourself in sudden outburts of detestation for human race. Other than that, it would be very fine performance.
I've been listening to a good deal of late 19th/early 20th century French music recently... partially due to my acquisition of a slew of Ansermet Eloquence recordings. But then I am also just finding myself quite enamored of the French music of this period. Perhaps it's not surprising that I've also been looking a good deal at some of the visual artists of this period:
By the way... I absolutely love the Chabrier!

Not yet, but this whole business is getting "curiouser and curiouser." Decca's own web site, as well as that of Presto Classical, shows the NTSC version of Königskinder as having only one DVD. (And, of course, Decca's email is temporarily unavailable.) Amazon will be the next step, but this is really strange.
