"Ah,non credea mirarti si presto estinto, o fiore." --Bellini, La Sonnambula (also written on his tomb).
Yesterday's walk - it's been a while since I last listened to this, and I love the opera:

Just got this Friday and am really liking it. Live performance and a great coloratura soprano Rosina.
However, the one above is from 1980s and is a brand prone to CD bronzing. I had a hard time ripping the tracks and the label side was cloudy. Consequently I got a 50% refund so it only cost me $3.50 shipped, but I would rather have gotten the recent re-release of the same opera, but for the ugly cover. This is not the first Nuova Era set I have had that was messed up by bronzing. There is a writeup on it on Wikipedia even. So this is the recent release I wish I had got instead:

This is new to me - what is CD bronzing? I've bought used CDs in the past that I've had trouble with - I don't know if it's poor condition or age. Fortunately, it doesn't happen very often, but Nuova Era recordings seem to be a particular problem. However, the one above is from 1980s and is a brand prone to CD bronzing. How do you rip tracks - for MP3 or, as I do, downloading into iTunes for playing over a pretty good sound system?
I should have noted there's a Fiat logo on that CD cover (lower right). No wonder it failed!
Bronzing
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compact_Disc_bronzing
I rip to MP3s. My optical drive is 10 years old. Several tracks would not rip, so I was able to manually save by loading those tracks direct from the disk to a music editor. I had trouble with the last two tracks of the first disk, which was in the same side of the double jewel case as the booklet (see Wikipedia article regarding this), and the last track of the second disk, which was on the reverse side of the center part of the jewel case. Disk 3 was farthest from the booklet and ripped fine. Later I had my son try it as he has a brand new Asus 24x DVD-RW Serial-ATA Internal OEM Optical Drive in the computer he just assembled. His drive ripped the disk fine, but there is clearly bronzing going on and the label side looks cloudy. As noted in the Wikipedia this disk, Manufactured in Italy by OPTI.ME.S, is one of the brands prone to bronzing.
I had another set that did this, also Nuevo Era and made by Opti.Me.S, which was refunded in total. That one I could not even get the last track to load in the music editor, and the last few tracks that did rip had static on them. It worked out nicely because the guy let me keep the defective set, so when the new set with the ugly cover came, I simply put those disks into the nice package from the old set.

Except for the recit which I deleted completely from my player![]()

In accordance with what i said on the opera watching thread I have been enjoying listening to some earlier Verdi recently. Gave this a try as its the one i got for my ipod
I really do love Ernani quite a lot it has a lot of zip and is a fun little opera. Taking my cue from Hoffmann I also decided to give Nabucco another try as it has been a while since I first saw it. I found this on YouTube
I enjoyed Nabucco more on a second run through but I still think many of my original criticisms stand (I have come to realize in Verdi I like it when he has a fast pace like in Il Trovatore Macbeth etc). That being said its a very good recording and If I am going to get one this will almost certainly be it. There is a fair amount to enjoy but it doesn't come close to Ernani for me![]()

Absolutely wonderful Sonnambula and unique:
I don't know of any other recording with a mezzo Amina other than one track with Marilyn Horne.

Getting a little extra-adventurous in my listening lately:
