This one 1971 with Stuart Burrows as Leicester instead of the later one (mid 70s) that has Pavarotti. Also I was informed once that the lady on the right has nothing to do with this opera.

Well.... I know I have posted about listening to this relatively recently but I was in the car journey back from Cornwall and as the journey is lo long listened to it once again.


I really do like Don Carlos. As a politics student It's an interesting opera with an interesting story and has some truly brilliant music. Also been dabbling in and out of this which I got recently as I said I would in another post.


I still like Ernani way more but Nabucco has its not insignificant charms but it was early in Verdi's career excusing some of the weaknesses I think it has (where did Ismaele go???). However, it is way better than Stiffelio and probably equal to or just below Aida which while having lots of good parts possesses its own fair share of weaknesses especially in comparison to Don Carlo which immediately precedes it and the revised Simon Boccanegra which follows it.

This Gardelli is a towering monument amongst many fine records of Verdi works. Just thinking about it makes we want to go and pull it out of the tea cabinet

I do think I have found the best NINA on CD. A shame it is out of print. Found this copy for $23 plus shipping used good. It is worth it. This Nina does act crazy but nobody will touch the craziness of Cecilia Bartoli in the Nina DVD. But all my other Nina's (3) just don't have that crazy edge.

Verdi: Simon Boccanegra. I know, me listening to Verdi, big suprise. My last time listening to a Verdi opera for the first time if that makes sense I've listened to every one at least once but this one. And it's a treat so far...I see why Sospiro loves it.
