Bwaahhaaa!
re: The Prokofiev boxed set, I've wanted that for a long time now. But I'm going to force myself to resist for now. Actually I'll probably just buy the rest slowly over time as I already have Oranges and War & Peace. For those of you who indulge, enjoy and let me live vicariously!
Now that my Amazon unlimited music subscriptions has expired I'm going to turn towards my own massive music collection and tryin to get to know these works really well. Lucrezia Borgia is one of my most recent acquisitions; I'm trying to get out of the trap of buying so much music at once that I don't even listen to some of it for months after purchase. I've dabbled in Donizetti but I don't know him well. So I plan to listen to all of my current Donizetti's soon: I own the Three Queens, Lucia Di Lammermoor, Elixir of Love, La Fille Du Regiment, an Don Pasquale in addition to this one. I'm going to try to discuss my current listenings in a little more depth in the future than I do know...I think (hope) that doing so will get me into a habit of more active listening so I get more out of my music collection.
I just started listening to Lucrezia this morning and have already been interrupted by the days activities. But I really like what I'm hearing so far. I'm excited to have both Marilyn Horne and Joan Sutherland on this recording!
Ok, $34.56 USD. Not bad. For some reason I was not finding it on Presto. So thanks for posting it. I think I have to pass though because I have way many operas to listen to that I have purchased and only listened a few times. However, I will keep this on on my back list for possible future purchase. Presto does periodically have sales. I do already have the Betrothal in a Monastery set too.

The story is a lot bloodier than the opera. Donizetti takes it somewhere else; the anguish of the mother, the confusion of the son, the bonds of friendship and other...
It is an opera I like very much and recommend for those fans of Donizetti and Italian operas of the period. Although at the time the story had issues with the bloody factor, I don't think it's something that would affect the modern audience who would not blink at a corpse on stage. In fact I think it has in part some black comedy (gangster one meets gangster two in a dark alley: "What are you doing here?"... " Err.. what are you doing here?") and this removes it from some of the more bloodier stories that are more popular like MS, AB or LdL. What takes it away from the commercial stage these days is the apparent mediocre music compared to the composer's more popular pieces which is a comparison harsh for appreciating this work.
It has some pieces that makes it a favourite of mine and listen to it often.
After reading the recent "Singers" thread about the possibility of Jonas Kaufmann singing Paul in Die Tote Stadt, I realized I had deprived myself of its pleasures for some months. Rene Kollo's timbre may not meet all tastes, but he hits every note securely. He's not KFV, tho', who owns the role.
Glad to hear my Lucretia posting opened up some discussion. It's fun when that happens
Right now, my first listen to this recording:
Verdi-Il Trovatore, conducted by Zubin Mehta.
Leontyne Price, Placido Domingo, Fiorenza Cossoto, Sherill Milnes
Wonderful!
