Just into the overture yet as it arrived today and I just finshed ripping it to mp3. However, in listening to the first minute or two of the overture, if I didn't know what I was listening to and were asked to guess, I would have said Mozart.

Bought this off Amazon and was pleasantly surprised when it arrived with a return address from my favorite local music store, Dearborn Music. Price was great too, $7 USD new. Now if only I had known, I could have picked it up in person. Maybe will ask next time.

I'm going to see Les vêpres siciliennes next month so I started doing some revision this morning. I only have the Italian version but with this cast, not to be sneezed at.
I would love to get the OperaRara French version but it's a bit too expensive.

I am on a Fritz frenzy. Here is what I have been listening to since yesterday:
Also ordered another set.

Mazeppa last Thursday and Friday. An excellent Russian opera. I really like all four of Tchaikovsky's operas that I've heard: (Onegin, Queen of Spades, Iolanta, and Mazeppa). I look to get Cherevicki sometime as my next Tchaikovsky opera
Richard Strauss DIE FRAU OHNE SCHATTEN
Conducted by Sawallisch
Both good. Rotman is live.

When I knew several forum chums were coming to London to see Les Troyens at ROH, I listened to this over and over again. I've listened to other versions but this is still my favourite.
Of all the operas I've seen live this is one production I want to see revived.

This very well may be my favorite Sonnambula:

It's been a day or two - so:
Awesome cast - awesome recording. It was amazing once I stopped to listen:
Leontyne Price
Placido Domingo
Sherril Milnes
Fiorenza Cossotto
Then, despite my better judgement:
Not to be confused with Vinci's version. I'm not sure what it was about Artaxerxes that was so fascinating to baroque composers but, anyway, composer Thomas Arne was not about to pose any competition for his (roughly) contemporary Georg Friedrich Handel. It might have been an off day for me, but I found this to be a rather dreary affair. Not to mention that it is in English and full of "thees and thous". Yikes.
Back to Earth today:
Birgit Nilsson
Wolfgang Windgassen
Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau
