I had a conversation that went badly wrong in the pub the other day when someone at the bar said he was a fan of Engelbert Humperdinck and I got excited and said I liked his works too...
As a university student finding someone who likes opera is an amazingly fun experience at my uni (it is rarer than a staged performance of Edgar). I made a firm friend in my third year with possibly the only other serious fan on campus (great lover of Wagner). It is however a rare experience fortunately the chess club doesn't mind opera (played Tosca during one session) and always has decent Jazz or other classical on so at least one hobby is satisfied (I like chess).
