I just finished Rossini's Otello, with Frederica Von Stade singing a gorgeous Willow Song
And I now I am onto another Verdi recording (I don't go TOO long without listening to Verdi!)

I didn't know Fidelio and needed to get to know it before I went to see it next year. For once I followed Luiz's advice and watched a DVD/YouTube before I listened to a CD.
Now that I know the story I find that listening is so much more rewarding... Who knew?
Anyhoo listened to this on my morning schlep to the shops and I knew what they were singing about.
Can't miss with JK as Florestan!
It's odd that although Florestan is the object of the story, he doesn't have much to sing. I'm particularly enjoying the beautiful voices of Falk Struckmann (Pizarro), Christof Fischesser (Rocco) and Peter Mattei (Don Fernando).

I know Pavarotti isn't the most popular tenor but I do love his voice here and Milnes is superb.
So I am not the only one who doesn't really care for Pavarotti. But if you want Freni, you often have to take Pavarotti. I got around that in L'amico Fritz by ordering an older set with Freni.

Yes, I'm another (or Sutherland or Caballé for that matter). I know they can all sing superbly, but the tone of their voices grates on me.
Never mind, they have plenty of devoted fans!

That's the fascination and the wonderful thing about the arts - it's subjective and one person's opinion is just as valid as any other. It would be so boring if we all liked the same.
While I don't care for Sutherland (horrible diction!), I really like Pavarotti and Caballé.
