Verdi: Don Carlos (Five-act French version)
Joseph Rouleau (Philippe II), André Turp (Don Carlos), Robert Savoie (Rodrigue), Edith Tremblay (Elizabeth de Valois), Michelle Vilma (La Princesse Eboli), Gillian Knight (Thibault), Richard Van Allan (Le Grand Inquisiteur), Emile Belcourt (Le Compte de Lerme), Geoffrey Shovelton (Un Hérault Royal)
Great to hear All The Music. There is nothing I would willingly sacrifice except possibly the ballet music, lovely though it is, particulary the strings. But often these ballets interrupt the action unless the production does something useful with them. And one reason why I love Don Carlos above all other Verdi is that you have these five characters caught up in a horrible web of hopeless love, stifling duty, lust for power, repressive religion, all yearning for something they can't have; all with the most gorgeous music along the journey, and there is a wonderful story arc.
Musically, my other favourite Verdi is Otello, but when I watch it I get grumpy with both Otello and Desdemona because they seem rather dim.

That is a curious likeness. Back to the Altmann Leonore set. I am liking it better than the Blomstedt set. Blomstedt has a great cast and great sound. Altmann has a relatively unknown cast and good mono sound, but for some reason I really like it better than all my other leonore sets.

FYI for anybody purchasing this performance, this set has no libretto, no notes, just track list. There are other releases of it.
