Before I went to see Falstaff the first time, I bought and listened to several versions but this one became my favourite and still is. Shorter walk this morning so it fitted the bill perfectly.

I am on a Hollander listening binge (not all have been listed) but here is one I just discovered in my folders that I forgot I had and really haven't heard but once before. It is a great Hollander recording too.

It is from this set, which has a lot of other great recordings:

Contents of the set are listed below. I am also happy to see a great Tannhäuser recording because I only have one other and it is not that good. Not that I have ever heard Tannhauser yet. It is my last one of the major Wagner operas to explore and I have a video in the unwatched pile too.

    Beethoven:
    Fidelio, Op. 72
    Salzburg, 1969
Christa Ludwig (Leonore), James King (Florestan), Franz Crass (Rocco), Edith Mathis (Marzelline)
Vienna State Opera Chorus, Vienna Philharmonic, Karl Böhm

    Mozart:
Die Entführung aus dem Serail, K384
    Vienna, 6th September 1945
Elisabeth Schwarzkopf (Konstanze), Anton Dermota (Belmonte), Emmy Loose (Blonde), Peter Klein (Pedrillo)
Orchestra and Chorus of Austrian Radio, Rudolf Morat

    Strauss, R:
    Der Rosenkavalier
    Naples, 16th October 1971
Gundula Janowitz (Marschallin), Brigitte Fassbander (Oktavian), Karl Ridderbusch (Ochs), Ileana Cotrubas (Sophie)
RAI Orchestra and Chorus, Georges Prêtre

    Wagner:
    Der fliegende Holländer
    Bayreuth, 1959
George London (The Dutchman), Leonie Rysanek (Senta), Josef Greindl (Daland), Fritz Uhl (Erik)
Orchestra and Chorus of the Bayreuth Festival, Wolfgang Sawallisch

    Wagner:
    Tannhäuser
    Perugia, 1st October 1972
René Kollo (Tannhäuser), Gundula Janowitz (Elisabeth), Wolfgang Brendel (Wolfram), Mignon Dunn (Venus)
    Prague Philharmonic Chorus, Wolfgang Sawallisch

    Weber:
    Der Freischütz
    Salzburg, 26th July 1954
Elisabeth Grümmer (Agathe), Rita Streich (Ännchen), Hans Hopf (Max), Kurt Böhme (Kaspar)
    Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, Wilhelm Furtwängler

Now I am even more looking forward to this one arriving in my mailbox. I ordered a different set though.

    Mascagni: L'amico Fritz
Utterly charming. I wish his operas were more well known. I love this one and Cavalleria. I'll have to check out Iris at some point.
