I am continuing where I left off with Lucia, by extending the theme of Carlo Bergonzi & Anna Moffo as star-crossed lovers:
    Verdi: Luisa Miller

Picked these up last year at Dearborn Music in the dollar bin as two separate disks,
but the only online images I find are the combined 2-CD set. Just getting around to
listening to them and am blown away. What a extraordinary voice!

Bruson very good, Zampieri a bit shrill and Shicoff luxury casting as Macduff.

    Verdi: Macbeth
Renato Bruson (Macbeth), Mara Zampieri (Lady Macbeth), Robert Lloyd (Banco), Neil Shicoff (Macduff), Claes H. Ahnsj÷ (Malcolm), Lucia Aliberti (Dama), Petteri Salomaa (Medico)
Orchestra and Choir of the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Giuseppe Sinopoli

    Vivaldi: Ercole

I don't dive into baroque opera very often. After finishing Rameau's Hippolyte, I decided to listen to another baroque opera while I was in the mood for it. Vivaldi's operas are quite enjoyable.

Listened to this one. Sound quality not the greatest, but worth it for Anna Moffo.

But I don't have the CD (about $30 shipped used), so am listening off the DVD which appears to be the same performance:

and now on to this one:

Didn't enjoy this quite as much as I thought I would, mainly because Nadine Sierra has gone into the "sopranos who sing well but whose voice sets my teeth on edge" category. Dima did a great job of conveying a gamut of emotions. Of course as usual now when I listen to him I felt sad.

    Verdi: Rigoletto
Dmitri Hvorostovsky (Rigoletto), Nadine Sierra (Gilda), Francesco Demuro (Il Duca), Andrea Mastroni (Sparafucile), Oksana Volkova (Maddalena)
Kaunas Symphony Orchestra, Men of the Kaunas State Choir, Constantine Orbelian

The Devia set above is a great peformance tainted by poor sonics.

Now for my new set and my first break from Sonnambula in about five days (next up Dessay's Sonnambula ). Not fond of French opera. I have Benvenuto Cellini, Frau Diavolo, Guercoeur, La Perichole, Romeo et Juliette (Gounod), Samson et Dalila, Henry VIII, Tales of Hoffman. Are those all French? Anyway, of those I like mainly the Saint Saens operas. This new one is not bad though, kind of reminds me of Strauss' Die Frau ohne Schatten.
