The plot may be goofy, but the music is gorgeous!

This one has been lying in the queue since the thirteen favourite operas thread bump, lying on the table with Kempe seemingly pointing at me saying "play me now!".

I'd forgotten what a romp this is, quite funny really if you ignore the bit where Corradino orders the title character to be thrown off a cliff (she isn't). I always love it when Rossini includes bits in dialect; this time I think Neapoletan, I actually understood the spoken bits! And you can't fault the singing

    Rossini: Matilde di Shabran
Annick Massis (Matilde), Juan Diego Florez (Corradino Cuor di Ferro), Bruno Taddia (Raimondo Lopez), Hadar Halevy (Edoardo), Marco Vinco (Aliprando), Bruno de Simone (Isidoro), Chiara Chialli (Contessa d'Arco), Carlo Lepore (Ginardo), Gregory Bonfatti (Egoldo), Lubomir Moravec (Rodrigo)
Orquesta Sinfonica De Galicia with the Prague Chamber Choir, Riccardo Frizza

Note, this one is a fine performance but significantly sound quality challenged.

When I started listening to this I realised it was very familiar - must have heard the overture a few times. Very poignant to hear Jerry Hadley singing that the world was a crueller place than he had originally thought in view of his subsequent end. Great recording.

    Bernstein: Candide
Jerry Hadley (Candide), June Anderson (Cunegonde), Adolph Green (Dr. Pangloss/Martin), Christa Ludwig (Old Lady), Nicolai Gedda (Governor/Vanderdendur/Ragotski)
London Symphony Orchestra, London Symphony Chorus, Leonard Bernstein
