Back on track with my Massenet box
Like the music, love Alain Vanzo; less enamored with the libretto and plot
Le Jongleur de Notre-Dame
L'Opéra de Monte-Carlo - Roger Boutry
Alain Vanzo (Jean), Jules Bastin (Boniface), Marc Vento (Le Prieur), Jean-Marie Frémeau (Un moine peintre), Tibère Raffalli (Un moine poete), Michel Carey (Un moine musicien), Jean-Jacques Doumène (Un moine sculpteur), Antoinette Rossi (Angel 1), Amanda Cassini (Angel 2)
This is a better story; some nice mock-Spanish touches, and of course José van Dam impeccable in the title role.
Don Quichotte
Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse - Michel Plasson
José van Dam (Don Quichotte), Alain Fondary (Sancho Panza), Teresa Berganza (Dulcinée), Isabelle Vernet (Pedro), Marie-Ange Todorovitch (Garcias), Christian Papis (Rodriguez), Nicolas Rivenq (Juan)

My third listen to this opera, but my first of this particular recording
Got some fine singers on this one. I have a different set and have listened twice, but have not taken a liking to the opera.
"Ah,non credea mirarti si presto estinto, o fiore." --Bellini, La Sonnambula (also written on his tomb).
Just arrived. Out of my 21 sets, I place this along the the Lucia Aliberti Sonnambula tied for 2nd place. My top Sonnambula remains Gruberova.

Conductor/orchestra: John Pritchard, London Philharmonic Orchestra
Cast: Richard Lewis (Idomeneo), Gundula Janowitz (Ilia), Luciano Pavarotti (Idamante), Enriquetta Tarres (Elettra), Neilson Taylor (Arbace), David Hughes (High Priest of Neptune)
I couldn't choose between this live recording from the 1964 Glyndebourne Festival or the one from the 1957 Festival with the same conductor and Idomeneo, and Jurinac and Simoneau as Ilia and Idamante . . . so I bought both of them. And they're both wonderful.
