IIRC, there was a sound problem with mine and I sent it back. I got another and there was a problem with that too. Does your copy say it's been re-mastered?

Firstly, yes my copy of the Price/Domingo has been remastered.

And thanks for your recommendations the Davis/Carreras/Ricciarelli looks mouthwatering!!

I have the Mehta/Domingo and Davis/Carreras recordings, and enjoy both -- Mehta especially for Milnes' Conte di Luna, and Davis for the Ricciarelli/Carreras team.

One of my favorite operas by my favorite opera composers. This is my first listen to this particular recording. Primarily selected for Bergonzi who is my favorite tenor. Surprisingly he disappoints slightly in his Act I duet with Gilda, but otherwise I am enjoying his performance. Scotto is also a treat to listen to in fine voice here. I think I prefer other conductors to Kubelik in this opera, but I am not skilled in analysis and have a poor memory in any case

I have that recording, but find Trovatore maybe the least approachable of Verdi's operas. Now that I think about it, I'm not sure I've even listened to it... So, don't know offhand if it has the sound problem Annie referred to. I'll put it at the top of today's listening.

One of my favorite recordings. Reminds me why Katia Ricciarelli was one of the reigning sopranos back in the 1970s and 80s. She sounds great here, and this is my favorite of my La Donna del Lago sets:

Trovatore was the first Verdi opera that took me by storm. It has a lot of great music. Give it a listen and I think you will like it.

So, after this morning's intent to listen to the Mehta Il Trovatore, when I went to cue it up, I couldn't find it in my iTunes library. I was sure that I had purchased it, and rifled thru my hard copy files, located the CDs and and couldn't believe that I neglected to download it - but vaguely recalled a problem with the original download. I did the download, had no problems, and was caught off guard by the beauty of the singing. Leontyne Price is always a pleasure, but her voice really glows here - Fiorenza Cossotto, I think, tends to be underappreciated. When I see a recording with her as one of the leads, I almost always buy it, knowing that it will be something to look forward to.

However, what is really stunning is listening to Placido Domingo at his peak and luxuriating in just how beautiful and strong his voice was in those days. It really is a revelation. It brought back memories.

In sum, a terrific recording.
