This is the recording of Alcina I have. It may be historically "uninformed," but I love Wunderlich's manly Ruggiero. Makes one understand why the lady doesn't want to let him go.Lovely recording!

The summer opera season here will be getting underway in a couple of months, and Gounod's Roméo et Juliette is among this year's offerings. The quality of this recording is not that good (one takes one's chances with a budget label), but José Carreras and Patricia Wise are wonderful as the star-crossed lovers.

I found this one while clearing out the attic (preparing for the big move). Why I had consigned this to the attic, I do not know but was probably a gift a long time ago when we still had foam packing in the cd cases.
Levine here is painfully slow in places but beautifully poetic in others. The voices of Domingo, Norman, Morris and Moll are all wonderful here. I have found a small treasure in the attic!

I bought that when I was in my 'anything and everything by Carreras' phase. And yes it's a poor recording but Carreras shines.

Clearing out the attic (Part 2):
I figured out why I had this CD. Lost in the cobwebs of memory vacant space, I discovered that I had actually gone to see PlaDo sing Parsifal in 1998. I must have liked it; I went twice! How I bought tickets for two nights, I do not know. I think I must have bought the CD at that time. I found the programmes for the two nights in the attic.
I also found many other programmes I had forgotten I saw. There's a slow motion "oh yes, noooooow I remember" as I flick through the programmes...
Including
Simon Boccanegra (Agache)
Elisabetta (JDF)
and now I've forgotten again
Oh well. The memory stick is slowly getting worse...
Before anyone notices that this is a DVD and the thread is for what we are listening to, that is exactly what I am doing, listening--not watching. I ripped the sound track and play it on my MP3 player. I have the CD set but it was done in the studio a few weeks later, but this live version has way more life in it. It is and remains my all time favorite Fidelio! Also this was my first video opera with subtitles. I had attended some operas in 1980s but that was without subtitles and was mainly as a means to get dates with classier women

It did get dates but none panned out for the long haul. My wife can't stand opera and I long abandoned the opera-for-dates strategy by the time I met her. But at least the opera invites weeded out the women who were low life. I once had a blind date who wanted to meet at a nightclub. We met in the parking lot. She was drinking from a beer quart-sized bottle in a brown paper bag. I immediately knew this was not going far.
