Oh dear. I've got to stop reading this thread. Kubelik's Meistersinger is that good? How much did you say?
DA, look at it this way. If you didn't have your favorite Callas Traviata already, and the lowest price you could find was $52.00, but for the same price you could get used copies of Moffo, te Kanawa and Caballe, which way would you go? That's really what we're talking about here.
I paid almost eighty dollars for the Kubelik, and DA, I am telling you it would be a steal at twice the price. Glorious performances like this don't grow on trees. And BTW, the Kubelik Lohengrin is also fabulous, IMO second only to the Kempe EMI set. Kubelik has Janowitz and Stewart, just as in Meistersinger; Ortrud is Gwyneth Jones and James King sings the title role.

My plan this centenary year is to watch and/or listen to every opera that Britten, Verdi and Wagner wrote. Both these DVDs of Il Corsaro are quite good, fairly similar straightforward productions.
Jonas does not disappoint in this, really excellent stuff.
Sometimes Cencic can sound a little, how can we put it, vigorous, but he is at his best in this wonderful selection of arias.
