    The finals for Plácido Domingo’s Operalia competition are coming up in a few days.

    When I looked at the list of singers who will be participating, I was excited to see that some Cincinnati Opera alumni are among them, including our wonderful Roméo and Zerbinetta from this summer’s productions of Roméo et Juliette and Ariadne auf Naxos, Matthew White and Liv Redpath. Also among the “alums” are Piotr Buszewski, Tybalt in Roméo et Juliette; Aryeh Nussbaum Cohen, Ottone in last year’s L’Incoronazione di Poppea; and Christian Pursell, who created the role of Senator Potter’s assistant in the 2016 world premiere of Gregory Spears’ Fellow Travelers, and also sang (Liberto and four other roles in L’Incoronazione di Poppea.

    Of course, I hope all of the finalists will do their best, and will be interested to see who the award winners will be.

    Last night Deutsche Oper Berlin premiered a new La forza del destino directed by Frank Castorf and it has created quite a stir.

    To be honest when I heard the protests before the 4th act, I thought there was a riot. Then it got worse before the Invano Alvaro. In 20 years, I’ve never experienced anything like that!

    Opera house managements know what they're doing when they engage someone like Castorf, undoubtedly figuring there's no such thing as bad publicity. I'm sure some people will now try to attend one of the remaining performances of this production just to see what all the commotion was about. I feel sorry for the singers, who get caught in the middle in situations like this. I was glad to hear that Russell Thomas was still able to deliver such a fabulous performance. I keep hoping the local opera company will be able to engage him again, but fear that chances are slim now that his international career has really taken off.

    Oh wow, I'm sad that this very good opera company, one of our Hoffmann's favorites, is staging something that adds a lot of spurious stuff to Verdi's opera. When will stage directors understand that opera doesn't need any help? These masterpieces are self-sufficient and almost every time someone wants to add text and characters to a good opera, the result is a disaster. Poor singers... it seems like they still survived and did well, despite the director's excesses.

    I'm all for original and creative stagings, but I'm not for sheer alterations of the work itself. If someone wants to profoundly change a work, then they should find their own title, and publicize it as "based on" or "adapted from" the opera itself. If you add a lot of material, then it's no longer the opera.
