    If anyone's been watching Downton Abbey, Dame Kiri te Kanawa is showing up next season. She'll sing.
    And, since she's just a house guest, there'll be no reason to kill her if she wants to leave the show....

    This is going to sound supremely ignorant, but what should one listen for with baritone voices? I have a lot of trouble distinguishing baritones voices. I can usually recognize individual tenors and sopranos, but baritones sound very similar to me.

    Two good ones to compare and contrast from different eras are Sherrill Milnes and Simon Keenlyside. They are true baritones rather than bass-baritones.

    I think I hear what you are saying. Mattei's voice is so even. Absolutely no strain. And very good diction.

    Why aren't the Met Opera National Council Auditions televised or broadcast?
    This is a head scratcher to me.
    If PBS is capable of broadcasting the Richard Tucker Opera Gala, why can't something be arranged for the Council Auditions, which draws its pool nationally?
    It seems to me like the 2007 DVD "The Audition" was seen by a large audience and that people liked it.
    Why isn't there an audience prize like there is in Operalia and Cardiff?

    Alternatively, if the costs of setting up a Live in HD is too expensive, why not set up a pay-per-view online broadcast for the finals so that people around the country can watch or listen?
    This would be great exposure for young American singers.

    I entirely agree. It's mind-boggling. I was listening today to the announcement of the finals this Sunday at the Met, feeling frustrated that I can't attend it, and I was thinking, unfortunately I don't live in NYC any longer... with all this technology at the Met's disposition, why on Earth are they not broadcasting this nice event to non-New Yorkers???

    I vaguely recall a radio broadcast of the finals once in the late '70s or early '80s. Tenor Vinson Cole was that year's winner.

    Please forgive the diversion from the Met auditions..

    As an old rock fan myself, I think back with some amazement on an interview that legendary punk rocker Patti Smith (Patti Smith Group) did on Morning Joe some time ago, when she told Joe Scarborough that she loves opera and that her main (artistic) concern these days is worrying about the next Brünnhilde.

    Here she is on New York's WQXR discussing her 5 favorite operas ('that day', as she says at the end of the clip):

    So the Norwegian National Opera got itself a new look to their web-pages, and I for one think they are bloody gorgeous. If only they would release next season's programme soon.

    Perhaps. Some of the most ardent Parsifal fans amongst my friends are women. Kundry is a powerful character, and I think audience empathy with her plight may triumph over any perception of general misogyny. Of course, the Flowermaidens are not exactly an advertisement for women's liberation!

    True. There are many operas which I feel would be laughed off the stage were they presented as straight plays, but whose music raises them to Parnassus. Some of Wagner's works fall into this category, IMO. I say that not to denigrate the man, but to acknowledge that his great strength, rather than being in his dramaturgy per se, was rather in the presentation of words and music mutually seconding and supporting one another.
