Or, as JF52opera wrote:
Hi, dear opera lovers, and subscribers, I put on YouTube complete versions of operas - HD quality - various subtitles. Most of them are unlisted, because of YouTube rules (so I take the liberty to send the links in this message). - For now, some are "blocked in some countries" (I put stars before them).
Enjoy and regards

Great find JF52opera has fabulous youtube collection (especially the Verdi) posted in 720p HD quality!
I have saved his youtube homepage as a "favorite"
For Callas arias/operas in amazing sound from vinyl BJR originals check turnipoverlord youtube homepage
That's a good opportunity for people to see Adriano in Siria which is a great opera. I highly recommend it.
I'll be enjoying Die Liebe der Danae which I haven't ever seen.
Thanks, Davos!

Doch dieses Wörtlein: und, -wär' es zerstört,
wie anders als mit Isoldes eignem Leben wär' Tristan der Tod gegeben?
I remember reading a review of Guillaume Tell. The critic didn't only dislike that particular production, but also the opera itself, saying it was too long and the ballets in particular should be shorter.
No doubt that was true of the production he wrote about, which I haven't seen, but I recently saw a different production (Pesaro 1995) where the ballet was the best part of it, very moving and an integral part of telling the story.
The dancers were all from the Ballet Nacional de Cuba, except the leading female dancer Alessandra Ferri.
One of the ballets, in Act 3 Scene 2, when Austrian soldiers force a Swiss girl to dance, got more applause from the audience than any of the arias, and well deserved I thought.
Alessandra Ferri's reluctant dancing in that scene made me cry (which none of the singing did) partly because I was already disturbed by the preceding action when the soldiers humiliate the civilians, forcing them to pay homage to Gesler's hat on a pole.
The Cuban men were very impressive at being macho, which suited the meaning of their Act 3 dance perfectly. The choreography was brilliant.
In contrast to their dramatic dance as soldiers in Act 3...
in Act 1 the Cuban dancers were villagers. Ferri's pas de deux with the leading male dancer was joyful and very pretty.
That wasn't just a decorative time filler - it contributed to the main purpose of Act 1, which is to make us love the gentle Swiss villagers with their idyllic wedding scene, so we will feel all the more devastated when the Austrian soldiers get tough with them later.
Guillaume Tell is a political opera, but being an opera it explores the emotions that conflicts can arouse, rather than complex political ideas, and I think it does that very well.
The unspecific black uniforms of the soldiers made it seem relevant to many conflicts in the 20th and 21st centuries, the army oppressing civilians, and women abused as the spoils of war.
Rossini's music suits the plot and libretto. Less like his comedies and more like Verdi, he uses the orchestra to express the emotion of each moment, rather than having fun with the music for it's own sake. He even avoids the temptation to end each act with his usual manic crescendo, and he ends the last act with a hymn to nature and liberty.
The overture is unmistakably Rossini though, with its grand finish - ending, ending, ending... just one more flourish... will it ever stop?
Most of the singing cast are good, and well matched to their roles. The chorus can act, as well as sing, so the scenes where the crowd is herded around by the soldiers are very dramatic. But it was the Cubans' and Alessandra Ferri's dancing that made this production really exceptional.
Unfortunately the quality of the only video I could find of this production is poor - evidently a TV broadcast somebody saved on a home VCR. I wish I could find a better recording on DVD, but the Youtube video is still worth watching.
Save it for an evening when you have the patience to enjoy a 4 hour saga.

I did quickly figure out that the opera is Puccini Manon Lescaut because if the insanely long contrived death scence of Manon (entire final act), the modern staging freshens things up a bit.......still like Massenet Manon much better
The utube police have removed some of these but I got lucky and managed to download most before they were removed. I have watched a couple and they were excellent.
I was sorry to see that Turnipoverlord is gone and all his music has been removed. I agree that the sound from the vinyl BJR recordings had amazing sound.
Apologies if this has already been posted

You know, Annie, I don't know how to download from YouTube. Do you need special software? I certainly would love to have a copy of a production with "our" Richard Ollarsaba in it.
