Here is a review of this Fidelio.
I am in as far as just after Pizarro sends his soldiers to watch for a carriage. I do like the "doe-eyed Marzelline." Rocco is pretty good, rather a giant of a man. Jaquino is rather obese and buffonish. Pizarro is not spooky enough. Florestan looks like he walked out of the 1970s with that hair, but at least he is not obese.

Thanks. I had caught some clips of that on You Tube. I like it better than my DVD with Berganza of this opera, though that one is very good. In the Sills video I love the barber's barber-pole-striped shirt. A wonderful performance and Sills is delightful.

It is not ideal, but without subtitles it makes the video watchable for me. I do have the Chandos Opera in English Barber on CD and like it but they changed "The Useless Precaution" to "The Girl Who Loved a Stranger" which ruins those parts as well as eliminating the punch line at the end about removing the ladder being the useless precaution. The Chandos set includes Dr. Bastardo as one of the names the Count calls the Doctor when the Count is pretending to be a drunken soldier. Ill have to see what this video does in those places.

I do speak Italian (not very well, though - but I do understand it well, better than I speak it) but even if I didn't, by now the libretto of The Barber is so well known that there isn't really a need for subtitles.

I am there with Fidelio, and close on the Barber and in fact, plan also to watch the You Tube Netrebko Barbern (no subtitles) I posted above.

But when I tried to watch the You Tube La Perichole (no subtitles) it was useless as I am very unfamiliar with that opera. I often use DVDs with English subtitles to help learn an opera.
