The musical performance in this recent production of Aida from the Opéra Bastille is top-class. The staging . . . well, the director evidently has some sort of “message” she’s trying to deliver, though I’m not sure just what that might be. Exploitation of African societies by colonial powers? Appropriation of their art treasures? It is interesting, though, to watch an opera performance during the time of COVID-19. I was waiting for the usual applause after “Celeste Aida” when I realized there was no audience present.
